When is Hershey’s Chocolate not Chocolate?

Chocolate makers in the U.S. are trying to change the rules of what constitutes chocolate.

Right now, chocolate needs a certain amount of cocoa butter and cocoa solids to be called chocolate in just about all countries, including the United States and Canada. But they’re the most expensive ingredients and dry weather in the Ivory Coast and Ghana is pushing up the price by about 28 per cent.

So, wonders Hershey, what if we make chocolate with vegetable fats and artificial sweeteners but no cocoa, a change it’s asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for as a way to “modernize all food standards.” Hershey is the biggest U.S. candy maker.

Mockolate, cry chocolate fans, several of whom have launched website petitions to melt them in their tracks.

Google “Don’t Mess With Our Chocolate.” Today is the last day to file a protest.
